I was really thrilled that my dad got to meet Hayden! They seemed to get on very well and he got to see how nice of a boy he is!! I think we had a very proud granddad on our hands. He was very funny because he has his beard he was worried what Hayden might think of it, but Hayden is so laid back he didn’t care!!!

It was great having him here but it went so fast!! We went to the track to watch Indy 500 practice, got to play golf a couple of times, and took a fun trip to the Zoo. I’m not sure who enjoyed it the most – my dad or Hayden. Hayden was very animated during the Dolphin show though. It went on for like 15 minutes with very cheesy dance music, and he was jumping up and down on my lap the whole time. I just held him up so he was standing on me and he was loving it!!!!

Next time I’m going to make him stay for two weeks!

I’m sure John will elaborate when he gets time, but his dad Jim was here visiting for a week with his friend Jean.  It was the first time they’d met Hayden.  We had a really great time!  We went to the zoo, Indianapolis Motor Speedway to watch a practice, Lake Monroe to see Dad and Gretchen, Connor Prairie (a living museum, where everything is set up as a little town circa 1836 and 1886 and the employees all dress of the period and talk as though it is that time period), and had some nice meals.  We crammed in quite a lot in a short time.  The guys played golf a couple of times and we girls got our nails done as well.  But best of all it wasjust great that Hayden got to meet his Granddad.  They seemed to get a kick out of each other!

Baby Signs May 20, 2008

My friend Michelle recommended baby sign language, so I have decided to give it a try.   Hayden is sometimes waving bye-bye now so I have started trying to teach him other signs.  I kind of forget to use them a lot though. 0:-)  At the moment I am trying eat, milk, more, dog, and cat.  I know it will take time so I don’t have any results yet, but sort of related but not completely is that he started giving me kisses yesterday.  It is really sweet.  They are the big, open mouth slobbery baby kisses.  I will kiss him on his cheeks and then ask him to give me a kiss and he opens his mouth and lays one on my cheek!  It is soooo cute.  And it’s really cool because it seems that he has made the connection between the word and the action.  I feel like we are on the brink of being able to communicate beyond crying! 🙂

In addition to the discomfort Hayden is experiencing with his ear infection (which doesn’t really seem to bother him, apart from the drops that have to go in twice a day), over the last couple of weeks he has also been working on cutting six more teeth!  Two of them have actually broken through already, and the other 4 are just under the surface.  The first one to cut was his second from middle tooth on the top left side.  That is unusual because usually the order is bottom 2 middle first, then top 2 middle, then the 2 middle side ones on top, then the 2 bottom middle side ones.  The other one that has already come through is the left side middle on the bottom.  We hope his top middle ones break through before the top right second from middle, otherwise he will be a silly vampire baby! 🙂  They all look like they could break through any minute, so even if the side one comes through before the middle ones it won’t be long until they are all through.  He is going to look so different with all those teeth!  He got his bottom 2 so early that we thought the others would come through sooner, but it’s been 4 months with just those bottom 2 teefers.

Yesterday was crazy.  I had a busy day at work to start.  Hayden’s day care called at one point to say his ear was bleeding a little bit, they thought he had scratched it or something but couldn’t find where it was bleeding from.  I asked if it looked like it was coming from inside his ear because I would want to get that looked at right away, and they didn’t think it was but said they would call if it got worse.  When I picked him up it did look to me like it was coming from inside his ear which seemed like a bad thing.  I called the pediatrician but it was right when they close so no answer.  Their office is right next door to the day care (and I was still at day care at this point), so I walked over since I figured they were still there just not taking calls.  They were there and the dr said he would see me (he is really nice).  He was worried Hayden’s eardrum might have ruptured but it was only an ear infection closer to the outside of his ear (not all the way to his eardrum).  Phew!  I didn’t expect them to see me, I just wanted to know if it looked serious and if I should go to the hospital.  It wasn’t proper blood but more like fluid that was a little pink like there was a bit of blood mixed in, but it seems like if there is a chance there is blood coming out of your ears you would need to get that checked out!

So anyway the dr gave him a prescription for a week of drops twice daily, then I had to go pick Lucy up because she was at doggie day care where she will be boarded when we go on holiday in June.  She had to have an evaluation day because during the day it is a dog day camp where the dogs all play together and they go to their own crates at night to sleep.  So in order to check she gets along with other dogs she has a trial day.  So I go picked her up and we went to the pet store to get some cat litter, and you can take dogs in there so I was getting her out of the car while holding Hayden and she slipped out of her harness!  I managed to grab one paw so she couldn’t get away, but I couldn’t move because I was holding Hayden and was in a position where I’d have to let one of them go if I moved.  So I tried to get someone walking by to help but they couldn’t hear me (I will give them the benefit of the doubt anyway).  Someone did notice us though and a young woman came over and held Lucy for me while I put Hayden back in the car so I could get Lucy back in her harness.  Luckily Hayden thought the whole thing was hilarious and he was just laughing the whole time – I would hate to add baby screams on top of that!
Meanwhile, while I am dealing with a good 1 1/2 – 2 hours worth of this drama, Hayden is just saying da da da da da da DA non stop!  Where’s the mommy love?!  Actually, it’s exciting because I think he is starting to mean me when he says mama now.  🙂

Mutt Strut

Last Sunday Lucy, Hayden, John and I did the Mutt Strut, which is a dog walk around the Indy 500 track.  It was really fun!  There were so many dogs there, and Lucy was a really good girl.  We saw a few doggie scuffles but Lucy was a perfect lady the whole time. We met up with my mom, Jim,  and their dog Sophie.  We walked a short time with them, but they decided to walk the short circuit so most of the walk we did without them.  It’s a fairly long walk since the track is 2 1/2 miles long.  Hayden was really good until the very end when he got fussy, but it turns out his diaper had leaked so who could blame him!  And considering he had been in his stroller for near enough to a couple of hours he did well really.  Lucy was funny because she didn’t want to drink or pee on the walk.  There were loads of water stations with big baby pools of water for the dogs to drink from, and we would lead her over to the water but couldn’t get her to drink (I thought it was horses that applied to?).  When we got home she had a very long pull from her water bowl!

Happy Birthday to Daddy!

Today is my Daddy’s birthday!  He’s the best.  It’s a pretty day even though they said it was supposed to rain, so we went to the driving range and I watched Daddy hit golf balls.  We took a walk this morning, too.  Mommy and Daddy went out with their friends last night to celebrate and said they had fun.  I stayed home with Grandma and Grandpa which was the greatest!
