We have had to change up a few things to accommodate Layla’s eating.  She’s become a little high maintenance lately in this arena.  She eats fruit very well, and we had gotten in the habit of filling her plate mostly with fruit, with some sort of main entree.  Soon, she would eat up all her fruit and not touch the main entree (you know, the part that is supposed to fill her up).  Now we are feeding her as much as we can find that is healthy but not fruit, and she can have her fruit at the end.  That kind of worked for a short time, but now I am finding she eats a tiny bit of her meal and hands her plate over to say she is done.  So, we are currently weighing whether it is better to get her used to just eating what is given with fruit as a dessert if she eats enough of her other stuff, or if she should have some fruit which she will definitely eat even if she doesn’t eat her other stuff, in hopes she will stay a little fuller a little longer through the night.  She keeps waking at 6 am every morning, and we think it’s mainly because she is hungry.  She’s just not old enough yet to reason with (“eat this stuff so I can give you what you really want”).

She had also gotten into bad habits with her high chair.  For some reason, whenever I would sit near her she would decide she was done eating and want to come sit in my lap.  This would then be followed by a game she would play where she would dive into her high chair from my lap, and keep trying to go back and forth.  So now I eat my breakfast standing up, away from where she is eating, so she can focus on her food.  It is helping, but she is still so darn fickle with her food that it doesn’t guarantee she will eat all of her breakfast.

Hayden has been involved in a few sports lately.  He was on a soccer team in the early fall.  He was very keen to play before it started, but when they played actual games he was not into it at all.  To be fair, he was one of the youngest and the only one without an older sibling (so he had no frame of reference about what was going on).  John was the coach, which I know Hayden loved, but even with John being out on the field it wasn’t enough to make Hayden really enjoy the games.  We think he was just too young.  If he wants to try again next year we can see how he gets on.  I think it’s too early to rule soccer out.

He also started Tae Kwon Do a couple of months ago.  We were told it could be good to help him gain confidence and come out of his shell a bit.  I am sure that for a vast majority of kids, this is the case, but Hayden is not into it at all.  It is a huge chore to even get him to go, which is a great shame because the commitment we had to give was a full year!  I cannot believe that they make 4 year olds sign up for a one year commitment, but here we are.  We will see what will happen because if he continues to really not like it then we will work with them to lessen our commitment.  They know he is struggling with it and are working with him to try to help him through.

So next up is basketball!  Hayden has talked about  basketball being his favorite sport for quite some time now, so he is now old enough to be in a team and we have signed him up.  We had his first practice last week, and – surprise, surprise – he was not that into it!  lol  Again he is the youngest by quite a bit (although he holds his own in the height department).  It’s hard to get him to even practice dribbling at home or anything.  Hopefully we can figure something out to get him to dribble because otherwise he will be at a big disadvantage when the games start in Dec.

I think he will like playing sports eventually, but at this point I am putting a damper on any ideas he has had lately of playing baseball in the spring! 🙂

My Eyes!

Winter is closing in on us, which means it’s dark when the kids wake up, and it’s dark when they go to sleep. So when I go get Layla in the morning, she has the shock of going from pitch black (as she is always the first one up and there are no lights on in the house yet) to bright light as I turn on the lights. So to try to take away the shock I will get her from her crib before I turn on the light, and then cover her eyes before I turn them on. So over the last few weeks she started covering her own eyes when I would get to the switch, or if she still wasn’t fully adjusted to the light after I uncovered her eyes, she would cover them back up herself. It is very cute.

Speaking of light switches, she was pretty grumpy when I brought her home from day care today (combination of tired, hungry, and teething I presume), but when I took her over to the light switch and let her turn on and off the light she would laugh out loud. Very cute. However, it did create a little light switch monster, and once Mommy was all done with the light switch game she went right back to the mood she had been in. Oh well, it was nice to have 3 minutes of peace at least. 🙂
