Hayden and Layla's Place

Inside Outside June 27, 2013

I have two children, and neither seems to want to be in the same place at the same time.  Namely, Hayden never wants to go outside, and Layla

always wants to be outside.  Layla will wake up in the morning and ask when she can go outside.  I have to think of ways to bribe Hayden to be outside.  Sometimes something will work – Gatorade, chocolate, a puzzle book – and the next day the same thing might not work.  I think it stems from his allergies.  He takes an oral allergy liquid, and nasal spray, and (when I can convince him to) eye drops to try to control his allergies.  But, even with all that it is still not unusual to see him itching his nose.  So when I ask him why he doesn’t want to go outside, he says it’s because bugs get in his nose – that seems to be from a time when there were a lot of little gnats out that kept flying in front of our faces while he was also having an itchy nose, and I think he thought they were getting in his nose.  Sometimes it helps his mind to put bug spray on him when we’re out.  But really, sometimes there is just no convincing him, and he’d rather stay inside doing Legos or whatever he wants to do that day.

Summer is in full here, and that means it’s hot and when you’re outside you want to be by a pool.  John and I were both really adamant that Hayden learn to swim this year, so we’ve got both kids in private lessons once a week.  Hayden has been in swimming lessons many times before, but it’s always been in a group setting, and he’s never really made much progress (I think the main reason being he spends 75% of the time sitting waiting for the other kids, amounting to about 7 minutes of actual instruction).

They have a nice young man as an instructor, Michael.  I thought this would be really good for Hayden as he seems more responsive to men sometimes.  I have been blown away by how much progress Hayden has made.  First of all, he is really loving the water.  He’s been taking baths again lately (was really into showers there for a while), and he’ll lay on his back in the bath and “float”.  Sure makes washing his hair a heck of a lot easier, too!  In his last lesson he progressed to actually swimming strokes as well, as opposed to just kicking around the water on a noodle.  It’s been really exciting to watch his progress.  We told him that if he was actually swimming (no life jacket, etc) by the end of the summer we would take him to Great Wolf Lodge as a treat.  I think that has given him a bit of incentive, but he also seems to be enjoying it and taking pride in his achievements.

Layla is also progressing, but she is also crying a lot during her lesson still.  She’s getting more comfortable floating on her back and loves kicking around the pool in a noodle.  I’m happy with any progress she makes because IMO she’s still a bit on the young side to expect her to hold her own in the water without floaties.

“Journey” June 23, 2013

Layla has started naming her babies lately, and the most common name she uses is “Journey”. I don’t know where this name came from as it’s not like any names of friends or family (or even a word we say very often). I’ve tried different names to see if I am hearing her right – Dooney, Jeanie, Drewnie – and she keeps correcting me until I say it correctly as Journey. Kind of a cool name if you ask me!

Best Friend

Filed under: Mummy On Hayden — karagoodwin @ 2:17 pm

Hayden has a best friend at Primrose now, which is really fun for us because it has taken him a long time to really gel with anyone there. He’s pretty particular about who he deems a friend. He started talking about this friend in May, and we got an invitation to his birthday party a few weeks ago. I RSVP’ed to his mom and said Hayden has been talking a lot about his new friend, and I was smiling as I read her response to how much they hear about his “best friend Hayden”. Unfortunately, this friend cut down his time at Primrose to two days over the summer, so he doesn’t get to see him all that often at the moment. But last week he started talking about a new friend at school, so it sounds like he’s got someone he likes to hang out with when he doesn’t have his bestie around. And it all comes down to birthday parties. He’ll tell me he has someone he wants to invite to his birthday party (which will be in August – not really too near but from what his teachers say all the kids are always talking about who can come to their birthday parties, no matter how distant in the future it is).

Twenty Questions for the New Three Year Old June 5, 2013

Filed under: Mommy on Layla — karagoodwin @ 5:43 pm

In keeping with tradition, here are “Layla’s” answers to the twenty questions this year.  While she is old enough to answer them herself this year, most of these answers are based off my experience with her.  I tried to ask her the questions herself and she wasn’t being thoughtful in her answers (imagine that in a three year old!), just saying the first thing she saw (i.e. what is your favorite color? and she held up what she was holding at the time and said “this color”).

1) What is your favorite color?  Yellow

2) What is your favorite toy?  Dolls

3) What is your favorite fruit?  Strawberries (she says, although she has been known to turn them down from time to time recently)

4) What is your favorite TV show?  Team Umizoomi

5) What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?  Quesadilla, she says.  Not true.  She likes to ask for a “quesadilla” which for her is a tortilla with some shredded cheese (not melted) in it.  She’ll have a couple of bites and be done with it.  I’d say soup is her fave.

6) What is your favorite outfit?  Pink Colts jersey or Hello Kitty Shirt, jean skirt, “red riding” sweater or Hello Kitty zip up sweatshirt.

7) What is your favorite game? Ker Plunk (what a pain that is to set up!)

8) What is your favorite snack? Cheese Its

9) What is your favorite animal? She says birdies, but I think she just said the first one she could think of.  She loves our dogs and cat.

10) What is your favorite song? Alphabet song (she is saying she likes this more than She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain, but history would say otherwise)

11) What is your favorite book?  Magnet Color Safari book

12) Who is your best friend? Lila (from day care) and Sophie

13) What is your favorite cereal?  Cocoa Krispies

14) What is your favorite thing to do outside? Line up her strollers

15) What is your favorite drink?  Yogurt drink

16) What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas

17) What do you like to take with you to bed at night? “Colts pillow”, which is really a hippo pillow, lots of quilts, big Minnie, plus a whole bunch of dolls and stuffed animals that rotate between the bottom of the bed and up with her.

18) What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? Right now it’s cereal, but it changes all the time.

19) What do you want for dinner for your birthday?  Red Robin (mac & cheese – and not much of it)

20) What do you want to be when you grow up? A dinosaur.

I can’t believe she is three already!  She is such a wonderful little girl, we are really lucky to have her in our lives.  She’s so loving, cute, funny, smart, sweet… the list goes on.  Love you, little Lay! xxx
