Layla’s Sleeping Buddy March 13, 2014

Abbey has been sleeping in Layla’s room at night, which is soooo cute.  We had trouble for a while with Layla getting out of bed before she fell asleep, thinking of a million excuses ranging from needing to potty to something hurting to being thirsty.  Abbey started cuddling up during reading time before bed, and we started encouraging Layla to be quiet and still after the book was over so as not to disturb Abbey.  Low and behold, Abbey stayed and that really helped to break that bad habit of Layla’s of getting out of bed.  Even when Abbey doesn’t come straight in (Layla accepts that sometimes Abbey is having dinner at bedtime), Layla is still pretty good at staying in bed now – waiting for her. 🙂

It’s really sweet to go check on her later in the evening and see Abbey curled up next to Layla, with Layla’s hand still on her where she’d fallen asleep petting her.

“You Forgot to Spray!” and other happenings August 14, 2013

We went through a phase for a while where we’d put the kids to bed and they’d get up several times before falling asleep, needing to go potty or have a drink or tell us something – typical stall tactics.  I’ve been able to reign this in quite a bit recently, and it’s now not unusual for them to stay in bed once put down (Hayden is particularly fantastic at this anymore – although he does take try it on with John pretty regularly).  One thing that has helped with Layla is my monster and dinosaur spray.  Every night for the last couple of months I have “sprayed” all around her bed with my two sprays.  Even though we can’t see the spray, it has kept all the monsters and dinosaurs away while she is sleeping.  Every night we spray (sometimes she has to come out of her room to tell me I forgot to spray!), and every night while I’m spraying she asks me if it will “last all day night”.

Another silly thing we are doing is pretending the food that she hasn’t eaten wants to go into her belly to see its friends who she has already eaten.  She’ll be eating, say, cereal and leave half a bowl.  I’ll scoop up some on a spoon and put on a funny voice to ask her to please let me in so I can go see my friend/mommy/daddy/sister/brother/cousin.  Today she was even having me give each spoonful a name (rejecting most of the names until I got to the ones she liked).  It can certainly slow down a meal, but it’s worth it to know she’s had a good amount of food, and over time it seems to have gotten her to start off eating a good amount on her own before I have to do the show.

Kindergarten!

H Kindy
Somehow Hayden started Kindergarten today! When he hears me talking about him starting Kindergarten he tells me he’s already been in Kindergarten, because he did Kindergarten at day care. So I will qualify it by saying he is at big school now! He left this morning on the bus. I’ve felt pretty ready for him to start big school, since he’s six now and he seems really ready to start school and proper learning (I thought I would be fine with him going but did get a little teary as he was getting on the bus). He really flourished in Primrose’s Kindergarten program, and I’m excited about the advancements he’ll make in school this year. I kind of took for granted all he

H bus

was learning during his day care Kindergarten year, and then the “summer camp” session started where they stop the classroom learning and it became really clear through out the summer that he’d been learning tons during the school year because he kind of stopped learning there in the summer and as such stopped being interested in reading and numbers.

It’s going to be strange getting used to him being in school Mon – Fri. I typically do a flex schedule with all my hours completed M – Th so I can have the kids on Fri. Now it will just be me and Layla during the day on Friday. That will be good though because I haven’t really had any one-on-one time with her, whereas I had almost three years with Hayden. Watching all the excitement of us getting ready for Hayden to start school over the last few weeks has made her super excited about starting Kindergarten in two years!

“Journey” June 23, 2013

Filed under: Mommy on Layla — karagoodwin @ 2:32 pm

Layla has started naming her babies lately, and the most common name she uses is “Journey”. I don’t know where this name came from as it’s not like any names of friends or family (or even a word we say very often). I’ve tried different names to see if I am hearing her right – Dooney, Jeanie, Drewnie – and she keeps correcting me until I say it correctly as Journey. Kind of a cool name if you ask me!

Twenty Questions for the New Three Year Old June 5, 2013

In keeping with tradition, here are “Layla’s” answers to the twenty questions this year.  While she is old enough to answer them herself this year, most of these answers are based off my experience with her.  I tried to ask her the questions herself and she wasn’t being thoughtful in her answers (imagine that in a three year old!), just saying the first thing she saw (i.e. what is your favorite color? and she held up what she was holding at the time and said “this color”).

1) What is your favorite color?  Yellow

2) What is your favorite toy?  Dolls

3) What is your favorite fruit?  Strawberries (she says, although she has been known to turn them down from time to time recently)

4) What is your favorite TV show?  Team Umizoomi

5) What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?  Quesadilla, she says.  Not true.  She likes to ask for a “quesadilla” which for her is a tortilla with some shredded cheese (not melted) in it.  She’ll have a couple of bites and be done with it.  I’d say soup is her fave.

6) What is your favorite outfit?  Pink Colts jersey or Hello Kitty Shirt, jean skirt, “red riding” sweater or Hello Kitty zip up sweatshirt.

7) What is your favorite game? Ker Plunk (what a pain that is to set up!)

8) What is your favorite snack? Cheese Its

9) What is your favorite animal? She says birdies, but I think she just said the first one she could think of.  She loves our dogs and cat.

10) What is your favorite song? Alphabet song (she is saying she likes this more than She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain, but history would say otherwise)

11) What is your favorite book?  Magnet Color Safari book

12) Who is your best friend? Lila (from day care) and Sophie

13) What is your favorite cereal?  Cocoa Krispies

14) What is your favorite thing to do outside? Line up her strollers

15) What is your favorite drink?  Yogurt drink

16) What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas

17) What do you like to take with you to bed at night? “Colts pillow”, which is really a hippo pillow, lots of quilts, big Minnie, plus a whole bunch of dolls and stuffed animals that rotate between the bottom of the bed and up with her.

18) What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? Right now it’s cereal, but it changes all the time.

19) What do you want for dinner for your birthday?  Red Robin (mac & cheese – and not much of it)

20) What do you want to be when you grow up? A dinosaur.

I can’t believe she is three already!  She is such a wonderful little girl, we are really lucky to have her in our lives.  She’s so loving, cute, funny, smart, sweet… the list goes on.  Love you, little Lay! xxx

We are really pretty lucky when it comes to our kids and sleep, but lately Layla has been getting up a bit too early and refusing to go back to bed.

She has been in a big girl bed for 4 months or so, so we are really at her mercy to stay in bed.  We never had any trouble whatsoever with Hayden when he went in his big boy bed all those years ago.  We told him he couldn’t get out of it, and he listened.  Layla on the other hand has no trouble making her own rules and coming into our room an hour or more before wake up time.  Last night, in fact, in the middle of the night I woke to her climbing into bed in between me and John.  I had to physically pick her up and carry her back to her bed.

So my friend Anita has lent me this clock that is supposed to show her when it is ok to get up.  You set it to a specific time, and once that time comes it lights up and has a picture of the sun on it.  All through the night it stays dark and has a picture of a star on it, to show it’s time for sleep.  Last night was the first night we tried it.  She was really excited about it at first (as was Hayden, who wanted one in his room), then as it got closer to bedtime she started to act a little scared of it.  She asked me to take it out of the room, but I was able to talk her out of that.  We tried to set it to an early enough time that she wouldn’t have to wait too long before she saw the sun light up.  We figured we’d get her used to it and as she got the hang of it we’d start setting the time a little later each day.  She woke up before it lit up though.  John took her back into her room and stayed with her until it lit up.  So, hopefully she will know for tomorrow what will happen.  It would be good to be able to get an extra 30 minutes or so in the morning – particularly on the weekend!
