We had a fun Thanksgiving holiday!  Hayden’s Grandma Goodwin (Nanny) was here with her friend Dave, and we did our usual routine of going to Grandpaman and Grandma G’s on Thanksgiving Day and Grandma and Grandpa’s on the following day.  Hayden was a pretty well behaved boy during both events, although he did find it hard to sit at the table for too long at Grandpaman’s house.  He was starving by the time we sat down to eat, so in order to keep him from going crazy we were feeding him as the dishes were still going around.  There were 19 people there (!), and by the time everyone’s plates had food piled high and we’d said our thanks and cheers, he was just about done eating.  Luckily, the way the room was arranged he could not get out of the dining room because people were blocking the exits, so he stayed near enough that we didn’t have to run after him too much.  My cousin Mandy and her parents, Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Bill, came down from Chicago as well as Grandma G’s brother and his family and her aunt and uncle.  Add to that the five of us and Grandma G’s parents, and it was certainly a full house!

Grandma’s was fun, too, and Hayden had a great time as always playing with his cousins.  There was a kid’s table set up, so he got to sit off with his cousins for dinner.  He did a good job with that.  Jesse and Robby actually finished their food much faster than Hayden, so John sat with him for a while as he felt badly he was sitting by himself. 😉

Nanny (John’s mom) loves to send Hayden Mr. Men books.  He loves reading them, and he asks for them to be read to them multiple times a day.  He’s started to do a couple of funny things with these books the last few days. Nanny always signs the books on the back of the cover: To dear Hayden, lots of love Nanny Mad.  So before the story is started we read that to Hayden.  Now when he “reads” the books on his own he will open one up and say, “Dear Hayden.”  Also, he knows most of the characters names and it seems “Mr.” has become “me” to Hayden.  He will be “reading,” say, Mr. Bounce and he will say “Me Bounce” and then make up a bunch of words, then turn the page and say “Me Bounce” followed by incomprehensible words, and on and on.  If he is reading Mr. Bump then he will be saying “Me Bump” at the start of each page.  He is very animated when he reads and it is so sweet hearing the rise and fall of his voice as though he really is reading.

Hard to know where to start with the Nanny story (she’s stayed with us for a three week holiday!).  I guess I start at the beginning.  We had been prepping him for a while about her visit.  He would run around the house shouting “Nanny” and would run into the office (because he is used to seeing her on the web cam on the computer!) and point at the monitor.  It’s funny how he builds these associations.

As soon as Nanny arrived Hayden took to her straight away – probably because he remembered how much he gets spoiled!  Since he’s been talking he typically goes very shy if it’s not just Kara and me, but not with Nanny – he was chatting away to her straight away.

Her suitcase had a big heavy label on it …..- No wander it was full of toys and books for Hayden!!  Everyone day a new toy mysteriously appeared, a huge grin appeared on Hayden’s face, and Nanny was number one again!   Every night Nanny would come in when I was getting him ready for bed and I turned into chopped liver!  All he wants is Nanny and then he settles in for a night time reading session with Nanny before bed.  He makes her work though as he normally wants 2 or 3 books read to him!   Then he would give her a kiss and go to sleep immediately excited for the next day with his Nanny!!

We all went to an Indians game one night (local baseball team) and at the end of the game they had fireworks.  Hayden hadn’t really seen fireworks properly (well certainly not close up and loud like these were).  It was also about 9.30pm so it’s real late and these are loud and bright.  He started on Kara, after a while he got a little scared and scrambled across to me.  It was good for another 5 minutes or so and then he got spooked again and this time scrambled across to Nanny where he hung out for the rest of the show.  He looked very happy and obviously felt very safe!!    I suspect Nanny is telling everyone she meets about this story how she was the one he needed when he got scared!!

On her last day he was extra clingy to her.  It’s like he knew she was leaving!  At bath time he gave her the biggest cuddle and refused to be put in the bath as he just wanted Nanny cuddles!!  Her face was priceless!!   It’s such a shame she can’t see more of Hayden (and vice versa).  They clearly love each other very much!

Come back soon Nanny – we all love you!

Nanny (John’s mum) has been here for a couple of weeks now. She will be here for two months, caring for Hayden while we work. We have pulled him out of day care during this time so he can spend some good quality time with her. We have probably chosen the most exhausting time for her to do this, seeing as he is all over the place with his crawling, grabbing, pulling up, etc. She is definitely getting more than her fair share of exercise! It has been really nice having her here, and she seems to be enjoying her time. I love having Hayden here during my work day. I get to have little cuddles throughout the day and hear him laughing and getting up to mischief. And Nanny has already witnessed at least one ‘first’ – climbing up the step from the sunken family room up to the kitchen. He now can slowly crawl up the entire staircase (obviously only while someone is behind him, just in case)!

Yeah, I think I got a little ahead of myself with the cruising proclamation. He definitely pulls himself up on things and picks his feet up while he stands, but he hasn’t really started going anywhere yet. He can turn around if there is something behind him to keep him steady, but he’s not shifting his feet enough to cover any distances. We did get him some shoes yesterday though, in anticipation of him spending more time on his feet soon. 🙂 He now has the cutest pair of white shoes with these little lights down the side that light up when he takes a step. He won’t be wearing them much until he actually starts walking, since I have read it can be easier for babies to learn to walk when they are barefoot (plus it’s so hot here that there’s no sense having shoes and socks on if you don’t need them), but at the very least they will come in handy if we have him outside and want to let him ‘walk’ around with our help.

We went to Florida last week, Saturday through Wednesday.  It was such a nice trip!  Michelle and Madeline have a timeshare down there which has room for 10, so we stayed there and it was a really nice place.  It was a fun group – Madeline, Michelle, Deirdre, Michelle’s friend Kayleigh and Johnny, and Johnny’s 12 year old son Tyler.  (And John, Hayden, and me of course.)  We had mostly good weather.  It was raining when we got there but the other days were mostly sunny but a little cool.  When we got there we went to see my aunt and uncle, Jeaneen and Alvin.  We couldn’t get in to the timeshare until 4 pm, so they were kind enough to host us at their house.  We had some lunch and took a walk.  They live out in the country and a foal had been born in the last week so we walked about 1/4 of a mile to see that.  It started raining when we got there!  My uncle tried to hurry ahead to get the car to drive us home, but we were such fast walkers that by the time he picked us up we were about 100 yards from his house. ha!  Sunday we hung out around the pool in the complex where the timeshare is.  It was a beautiful day and probably the warmest one we had.  Hayden went in the pool briefly, but the water was not too warm so we couldn’t keep him in long.  We managed to keep him in the shade quite a bit since we brought a little UV-blocking tent with us that pops up really easily.  That night we met up with my aunt and uncle again as well as my cousin and her family for dinner.

Monday we went to Sea World!  We met Faith and Steph and their kids there, which was excellent!  John and I love Sea World, and it was the perfect place to take Hayden at his age.  We watched a couple of the shows, and Hayden was actually pretty interested in them.  During the first show we sat through, I was going ‘Ooooo’ whenever something cool would happen – as you do – but that would cause him to stick his lip out and start crying!!  So I had to curb that (although he seemed to get used to it as I accidentally did it a couple of more times that day and he seemed ok with it).  When we saw Shamu’s show, they have this little Shamu chant with arm motions that they have the crowd do and we were making his arms do the motions while we shouted ‘Shamu,’ and he loved that!  We have done it several times since then and he still gets a big smile.  Shamu!

Tuesday we played miniature golf until it warmed up a bit, then spent some time by the pool.  We left Wed night, but that day we went to the new Sea World water park.  We were going to do that on Tues, but it was too cold for a water park that day.  Wed it was still fairly cold out, but warmer.  It’s a nice little water park.  There is a slide that goes through a dolphin tank which looked pretty cool.  The line was really long for that one, though, and since we had a plane to catch we didn’t have time to wait for it.  Michelle, Johnny, Kayleigh, and I went on a group ride where we were all in a raft together, and it was quite fun because we picked up a lot of speed but at the end of the slide it stops very abruptly and we had been going so fast that we ended up crashing into each other.  Kayleigh and I knocked heads and now I have a big black eye!!  I look like I’ve been beaten up.  Makeup doesn’t even cover it.  😦

So as you can see it was a really fun trip!  Hayden did really well on the plane on the way there.  You wouldn’t have even known we had a baby with us, he was quiet as a mouse!  On the way back he was a little noisier (he discovered this screeching sound while we were in Florida which is quite loud and he was doing that a lot on the plane), but once he was fed and changed he settled down and eventually went to sleep.  Unfortunately Hayden was not himself on the trip.  I imagine it was a combination of being out of his routine, less sleep, unfamiliar surroundings, and so on but he was just very serious the whole time we were there.  Usually he is pretty happy-go-lucky and spends a lot of time laughing and smiling, but on the trip it was really hard to even get him to smile.  He was fussier than usual as well.  As soon as we got home and he got back on his schedule he got back to his old self.

Nanny Mad and Great Auntie Deirdre have been here for about a week and a half now!  I love having them here soooo much!  They play with me all day, and they watch me while Mommy and Daddy are at work so I get to stay home instead of having to go away to day care.  I like day care and everything, but you can’t beat being home!  They take me and Lucy on long walks while it’s nice out and I get to be in the fresh air and look at everything that we pass by like trees and houses and cars.  We have done a lot of shopping since they have been here, and they like to buy me fun things.  Today we went to the toy store and I got some presents for my birthday, even though it’s not for another few months! 🙂  How great is that!  Soon we get to go to Florida and I will see my Auntie Michelle, plus my girlfriend Avery (one of them anyway – don’t think I’ve forgotten about you Bella and Claire, wink wink) is going to come to Sea World with us and I will get to meet my buddy Jaden when he and his mommy Steph also come to Sea World.  It’s going to be the greatest trip!  I’ve had to get some warm weather outfits for the trip and for when the weather gets warm enough in Indy.  I am growing so fast that Mommy has even gotten some 18 month clothes because she didn’t think I would stay in the 12 month clothes long enough to make them worthwhile.

Grandpaman’s initiation October 11, 2007

Last night John and I went to a Paolo Nutini concert with my stepmom Gretchen and her friend, and my dad – Grandpaman – volunteered to babysit.  Hayden had not slept well in the afternoon, so he was fussy when they got here but I was hoping he might crash out into the land of nod before long.  When we got back from the concert we learned that he cried for about two hours before he fell asleep!!  Poor Grandpaman!  When I couldn’t get Hayden to stay asleep all afternoon I kept pleading with him to pleeease be a good boy for Grandpaman, especially if he was bound and determined to be tired when we left.  I had written out a little ‘Hayden guide’ for Dad with lots of ideas on how to get him to stop crying.  He went through most of the ideas on the list and they didn’t seem to help much.  Unfortunately, the weather turned dramatically yesterday and we went from nearly 80 degrees as a high on Tuesday to mid- to high-50s as the high on Wednesday.  So some of my ideas like bouncing him while walking on the back deck and taking him for a walk in his stroller around the neighborhood weren’t very practical last night when it was freezing outside.

Yesterday was the third day this week I have had trouble getting him to stay asleep during his afternoon nap.  If any of you moms out there have any tips on how to remedy this please don’t be shy about offering suggestions!  I have tried letting him cry it out for 5 or 10 minutes but that seems to do nothing and I feel like he is too young to cry it out too much yet.

We really enjoyed the concert.  Paolo Nutini is pretty new on the scene so doesn’t have loads of material out yet, so we thought the show would be over by 10:30 or so.  He had 2 opening acts and didn’t even come onto the stage until about 10:20!  We were all a little annoyed at being made to wait until so late on a weeknight (yes, yes — we are old).  So when we got home it was after midnight.  Grandpaman was still awake, bless him.  I forgot to tell him it was ok to sleep if Hayden was asleep.  Hayden was just snoozing away in his swing, happy as a clam.  There was no evidence of all this supposed ‘crying’ that went on for ‘two hours.’  My son?!  My perfect little Hayden?!  Oh dear, I have just turned into John’s mum!!  🙂 haha ha haha haha!  Anyway, Grandpaman must have finally found a way to appease him.  I just hope he helped himself to the snickerdoodles I had left out for him!
