Hayden has started to call me Honey every once in a while.  He’ll just slip it into conversation, so subtly that you could easily miss it or think you misunderstood.  For example: “Are you on this train, honey?” (as he is playing trains he likes to ask us if we are on the train.)  Very cute.

We recently went on vacation to England and had a great time.  I imagine John will blog about that (I am completely overwhelmed by the thought of doing it – where would I even start?), but one “word” thing of Hayden’s from that trip was he kept calling the escalators “alligators,” which had me and John (secretly, so he would keep doing it) cracking up throughout the trip.

Abbey “Nightwatch Cat”

The kids are now to an age where if they cry out in the middle of the night we don’t feel like we have to rush right in.  We don’t want them to get into a habit of waking up and then getting attention, because that is not a fun game for the adults who also need sleep.  They also usually don’t wake each other up even if one is crying out (USUALLY).  However, our beloved cat, Abbey, has taken to becoming a backup alarm for the kids’ cries.  If one of them cries out and we don’t respond (often, intentionally) she will sit in between their rooms and meow at the top of her lungs – and meow, and meow, and meow.  We usually end up getting up more to keep her from waking the sleeping child than out of concern for whoever caused the kitty alarm.  It’s no fun getting up in the middle of the night, but having a nightwatch cat does provide a little comic relief when it does happen.

Dracula

This is not a great picture, but it’s the only one I have to illustrate Layla’s “dracula” move.  When she is first meeting people, she does this move where she puts her arm out just the way she is doing it in this picture.  Usually her arm is actually covering the bottom part of her face (she is only doing it halfway here – she must have started recognizing these guys a little).  My theory is her arm obstructs most of what she can see of the new person who is paying attention to her, and she must think that if she can’t see much of them, then they can’t see much of her.  We saw a LOT of this on our recent trip to England, as she was getting used to meeting so many new people.

Hey, Jealousy

I’m sure we’ve mentioned before that Hayden gets jealous of Layla pretty easily, particularly when it comes to Daddy time. He also immediately becomes interested in pretty much any toy she has taken an interest in. The girl stands up for herself though, and from the time she has been old enough to be interested in a toy, Hayden has been taking that toy away from her, and she has sidled up to him and bitten him! This has been going on for weeks, and I have no idea where she even came up with biting. I would love to blame it on day care (that is where Hayden learned it when he was a toddler), but when she started doing it the other babies in her room were too little to even be getting around, much less biting.  She does get in trouble when she bites, and now Hayden is known for taking a toy from her and then putting his hand right in front of her mouth to try to make her bite him so she will get in trouble!

So anyway, back to the jealousy front… Layla has now become jealous as well!  She will cry if I hold Hayden or have him on my lap, and she will scoot right on over to us and even tried to bite me once.  Apparently our kids feel a definite ownership over me and John currently: Hayden thinks John is his and Layla thinks I am hers.  We do what we can to try to get them used to the fact that we are both their parents, and most of the time there is harmony, but the green eyed monster rears its head often enough to make it noteworthy!
